P-series helmets in Italian Air Force use
Message 379, Jan 8, 2004
Hi all,
Here is some new information on one of the group's pet topics, the P-series helmets. This
time it is on the helmet's use in Italy, courtesy our new member pelikan57 in response to
my query sent on discrete (finger troubles, not an attempt to deprive you of this
interesting information):
"The P1 and P3 initially come direct from States at the beginning of '50 (with
American produced aircraft such as F84G), only P3 were later produced in Italy (probably
under license of one of the American producers), then at the beginning of 60's we
introduced P-4A and B (applying all the updating T.O. as the USAF did). The most known
Italian producer was GIUSTI of Rome (operating since before the second ww producing flying
suit for the Regia Aeronautica). The P-type (mostly P4) was in use until the mid'80, the
last using the same avionics of the HGU-2 (H-154A/AIC). We use mainly two types: one with
lens and related hardware for Jets and the other without lens for use with conventional
acft and helos (the studs you are referring to, are to hold the carbone microphone on one
or other side (the user could choose). Hope this info interested you, and asap I try to
send you pics of Italian helmets."
Keep tuned for the next episode...
Cheers,
Bluelight

Ciao Maurizio: Thanks very much for providing these good images of 1950s era Italian Air
Force pilots. They are quite interesting and show some details that are of note. You are
correct about the impact of USAF gear, as seen in Italy, Yugoslavia, and a number of other
countries. It is good that you think of helping those of us with special interests in the
1950s era and your images are certainly appreciated. Thanks again!
Ciao, DocBoink

Hi guys, during a recent "spring cleanings" in my Military Modelling Association
library, I found some old aviation magazines and books. Herewith enclosed you can find
some pictures regarding Italian pilots during the '60s. Please note the decals on the
leftside of the shell helmet. USAF "fashion" is clear visible....
Hope this is interesting for you....
Ciao, Maurizio

Hi Bones, I have some photos of Italian '50-'60s flight gears taken in Rivolto AFB where
you can see a P series flight helmet. I'll look for them and send to the group as soon as
possible....
Ciao, Maurizio
